- Program – “Rare Bear”, by John Penny
John Penney is one of the pilots of “Rare Bear”, the highly modified Grumman F8F Bearcat that dominated the Reno Air Races for decades. John with be sharing the details his involvement with the “Rare Bear” Air Racing Team (for over a period of 30 years), including his piloting the “Rare Bear” unlimited race plane from 1985 through 2010.
John first became associate with the “Bear” in the early 1980s while working as a test pilot for LearFan at Reno-Stead Airport where the National Championship Air Races have been held for many years. There, he met Lyle Shelton who developed the Bear, and Lyle asked him to race the plane for the first time in 1985.
During his tenure with the team, John piloted the “Bear” through six race team wins including four national championships at Reno and two at the Phoenix 500 races held at Williams Gateway Airport Arizona in 1994 and 1995.
The presentation will last about 30 minutes and will captivate your attention the whole time!
Bio: John has been a member of our club for numerous years and has primarily participated in control line at the center field. Helpful tips of experts such as Keith Trostle, Jerry Higgens, Chris Brainard and others have helped John regain and maintain proficiency in CL operations.Find out more »

- Program – “I Built It Contest”
Larry Green and John Welch have once again agreed to put on the annual “I Built-it
Contest”. Come and share what you’ve been working on through this cold winter.
The categories for this year’s IBI will be:
• Scratch Built
• Kit Built
• Old Timer
• Member’s Choice
• Best of Show
There will be certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories except Member’s Choice and
Best of Show. So, dust off that project you have been dying to show off and we will see you
2023 Colorado Pattern Challenge
Welcome to the 2023 Colorado Pattern Challenge (CPC)! The CPC is hosted
by the Arvada Associated Modelers. This is our 14 th CPC in as many years
and will take place at the AAM East Field. The CPC is 2-day, AA,
Sanctioned event for RC Aerobatics for Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced,
Masters, F3A Silver and F3A (P&F) (JSA combined). There are 6 rounds
planned (4 Saturday / 2 Sunday) with contestant judging. Trophy/plaques will
be awarded for 3 places, each class. There are NO aircraft restrictions for
Entry fee is $45 (all contestants) and includes lunch and beverages all 3 days.
The CPC also has many sponsors and prizes. We typically give away over $1,000 in sponsorship
merchandise to contestants and helpers. No one goes away empty-handed!

Please be advised the East Field will be closed to general flying during the 2023 Colorado Pattern
Challenge Friday (practice day) through Sunday, June 23-25, 2023. The East Field will be re-opened to
general flying AFTER the conclusion of contest activities. Expected East Field closure hours are as
Friday (6/16/2023) – 7:00 am to 6:00 pm
Saturday (6/17/2023) – 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
Sunday (6/18/2023) – 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
