Indoor Event at Schaefer

I'm just curious if any members have attended or plan to attend an indoor fun fly event at the Schaefer Athletic Complex? I keep forgetting about this. I see the next one is 9-11 the evening of our big harvest Festival event and then again in Oct.. I have a couple planes which would be appropriate. There was a notice in the July newsletter, but not August.

rc crash in the news

I don't know how many of you watched the 10pm news last night ( 8/23/10 ) but they had a segment about the recent rc versus a biplane crash with video footage of the event. I'm not privy as to the exact details but I'm guessing that this was a rc demo flight at an airshow. I'm guessing this because of the smoke from the overflying biplane. My problem is that the news was basiclly saying that the rc plane had no business flying in such close proximaty to an airfield. They quoted AMA rules as being a suggestion and not hard fast rules and we rc'ers were the badguys. There could be any number of reasons why these two planes were in the air at the same time but the news reported as they saw fit without finding out what and why things happened. They basiclly gave us a thumbs down as being irresposible and out of control. Considering the pending legislation for UAV's and RC aircraft through the FAA and AMA I think we should voice our concern for reporting such incidents without a qualified investigation. They should not just make an editorial comment with a bias toward our hobby. Remember that any FAA rulings are open for public oppinion and comment, get enough of the negative feedback then kiss our hobby goodbye as it is today. Bob P

2nd Annual RM3DT

Hello all, It is time for Chris and I to start getting ready for this years Annual Rocky Mountain 3D Throwdown!

Last years event was a terrific success with the volunteers help and a very good pilot turn out for our first time and such short notice. We had 25 registered pilots, and over $1500 worth of door prizes including 7 airframes donated by local hobby shops. DA donated $200 worth of coupons and Aeroworks dropped off a 50cc Extra. They were the biggest contributors, and we are supremely grateful for their support! Best of all we actually generated almost $100 profit for the clubs coffers!

With the big success and pilot interest there are going to be a few changes this year.

First: We are looking to change the date to August 27,28, and 29. Last year we had a conflict with the LAMA clubs annual 3D Electric event, so we are going to schedule our event for the following weekend this year. We could have had about a dozen more pilots from LAMA if we would have known about their event and planned around it.

Second: We are going to get this event AMA sanctioned so we can advertise in MA and with the added days we should be able to entice more out of state-ers to come out! Last year we had an entire family of fliers drive down from North Dakota! Chris and I are going to apply for our CD's and hopefully we will not need to ask any of the clubs current CD's to volunteer. We are getting started on the application process.

Third: We are hoping to use both fields for this years event. The only complaint we received last year was from a few of the Giant Scale guys. They were intimidated by the number of smaller glow and electric planes that filled the sky, and did not want to risk their $6000 airframes with a pile of $200 planes flopping around. We are hoping to use the West field for the smaller aircraft, and let the Pro Bro's gas and go all day long!

Fourth: Last years T-shirts were well appreciated, but Sportline was very difficult to work with, and was a little spendy. This year we plan on using vistaprint.com to make color shirts with a back and a front panel for even less then we spent on them last year.

Fifth: We are going to up the pilot free to $25 to include a T-shirt and lunch on Saturday. We have notdecided what to do about Sunday's meal, or just let the attendees fend for themselves.

Finally, we would like to organize a raffle for the best door prize. If Aeroworks steps up again I would really like to try and generate some more money for the club. We would have last year, but had no idea we would get such a terrific response from the sponsors!

Daniel has expressed his intention to dedicate a website to the event for promotions, registrations, and media. Daniel please chime in when you can, and I'm sure we'll be talking at the next meeting.

Thank you, and carry on!

Rossi .61 Motor

I purchased a Rossi .61 Rear Exhaust motor last spring. I have over 5 gallons of fuel run through it. I have tryed different header pipe lenghts and different amounts of nitro fuel. Also many different prop sizes. I have had Mike Gruenwald and Joe Pirizzoli also try to set motor. The motor does not run correctly and can not be ajusted. I sent motor to Rossi factory in Italy. I had marked motor and found on return It had not been taken apart or test run. They say they did but I had put silicone on back plate and left glow plug loose and marked head screws. The only thing they did was loosen the carb and turned it. I ran the motor when I got it back and found it still had all the same problems.

My point is look out.
